Grammys

Last night, the stars came out to celebrate and pay their respects at the 54th Grammy Awards.

During the three-and-a-half hour spectacle, Jennifer Hudson paid tribute to Whitney Houston, Rihanna and Chris Brown performed (but not together) and The Boss took the stage with Sir Paul McCartney

It was a night for both new musicians, as Adele owned the night with six Grammy wins, and for music legends Tony Bennett and The Beach Boys who took the stage.

Also, we found out why Nicki Minaj showed up to the ceremony with a man dressed as a pope, Taylor Swift played the banjo and Lady Gaga surprisingly went home awardless.

Check out our entire rewind of last night.

Bruce Springsteen kicks off the night with "We Take Care Of Our Own."

Host LL Cool J started off the show with a prayer for Whitney Houston.

Bruno Mars pays homage to James Brown on stage. Kills it.

Tributes to Whitney Houston helped Sunday's 54th Annual Grammy Awards draw more than 39 million viewers, the second-largest audience ever for the show, according to preliminary numbers.

The show, which aired on CBS, was the most-watched since 1984, when Michael Jackson won a record-setting eight awards.

It was up more than 40 percent over last year's ceremony in the ratings, scoring a 14.1 in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, according to the preliminary numbers.

That would match the highest rating since the 14.2 in 1990, when Bonnie Raitt led with four awards. (1990 was also the year Milli Vanilli won the Best New Artist Award, which was revoked when it was revealed that the duo had not sung on their album.)

The Grammys also had a 14.1 in 1993, when Eric Clapton dominated with six awards.

Before the Grammys, "60 Minutes" at 7 p.m. aired an interview with Adele (who went on to receive six Grammys) that scored a 2.9/8 and 14.5 million total viewers. It was up 93 percent in the demo from the last "60 Minutes" original airing two weeks ago. CBS was easily the highest-rated and most-watched network, averaging an 11.5/27 in the demo and 34.5 million viewers.

ABC drew the second-highest ratings of the night, but dropped off dramatically from CBS's numbers. "America's Funniest Home Videos" at 7 enjoyed a modest boost with a 2.0/5 in the demo and 7.7 million total viewers, while "Once Upon a Time" was down 14 percent from its most recent original airing two weeks ago with a 3.0/7 in the demo and 8.6 million total viewers. "Desperate Housewives" at 9 slid to a series low, dropping 31 percent to a 1.8/4 in the demo and drawing 6.3 million total viewers, while "Pan Am" closed out the night at 10 with a 42 percent nosedive from its last original airing three weeks ago, dropping to a series low of 0.7/2 in the demo and 2.6 million total viewers. Overall, ABC averaged a 1.9/4 in the demo and 6.4 million total viewers.

Fox ran a "Bob's Burgers" repeat at 7, followed by "The Cleveland Show" at 7:30, which posted a 1.2/3 in the demo and 2.7 million total viewers. "The Simpsons" at 8 drew a 2.0/5 in the demo and 4.3 million total viewers, while "Napoleon Dynamite" at 8:30 received a 1.7/4 in the demo and 3.8 million total viewers. "Family Guy" at 9 took a 2.5/6 in the demo and 4.9 million total viewers, while "American Dad" finished the night at 9:30 with a 1.7/4 in the demo and 3.5 million total viewers. The network was third in ratings and fourth in viewers, averaging a 1.7/4 and 3.6 million.

On NBC, "Dateline" from 7 to 9 grew 33 percent from its last original airing five weeks ago, posting a 1.6/4 in the demo and 6.7 million total viewers, while "Fear Factor" from 9 to 11 dropped 35 percent from its most recent telecast on Jan. 9, hitting a series low in the demo with a 1.5/3, with 3.7 million total viewers. NBC was fourth in ratings and third in viewers with a 1.5/4 and 5.3 million.

Taylor Swift Awkwardly Beatboxed For LL Cool J At The Grammy Awards Nominations Concert

12 Things The Grammys Actually Got Right With This Year's Nominations

$

Adele Grammys

The Grammys are never going to be perfect.

They’re too mainstream, they’re too out of touch, they reward past-their-prime legends, their idea of “rock” is comical at best, they focus too heavily on a single album every year (like "Supernatural" in 1999), they love Taylor Swift more than any 55-year-old should (and this is coming from someone who doesn’t hate Red.) … the list goes on and on.

And after awhile, it stops being fun. It’s an awards show, people; it’s inherently dumb and pointless. So let’s focus on some positives.

The 2013 Grammy nominees were announced last night by LL Cool J and, you guessed it, Taylor Swift, who beatboxed for no apparent reason, and … they’re not perfect. You can see the full list of nominees here, but everything we said about this awards show above is still true this year.

But again, enough moanin’ the blues (a song the Grammys would have likely ignored) — let’s focus on 12 things the 2013 Grammys got right.

1. Mumford & Sons, fun., Frank Ocean, Jay-Z, Kanye West, and the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach all received six nominations, the highest of the year. It’s not a rock-solid group (neither Kanye nor Hova put out their best work this year, and hearing “We Are Young” every day for the past 17 months makes any mention of fun. boil the blood), but it’s not embarrassing, either. For the Grammys, who sure love their earnestness, consider that progress.

2. Good job, including Miguel’s gorgeously sensual “Adorn” in the Song of the Year category (even if he’s almost assuredly going to lose to “Call Me Maybe” or “We Are Young”).

3. Likewise, “Record of the Year” isn’t too shabby:“Lonely Boy” by the Black Keys and “Thinkin Bout You” by Frank Ocean are about as solid as top-40 gets these days. It’s still shocking that Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” became as big of a hit as it did, but Kelly Clarkson is always a welcome radio respite (“Stronger”), and “We Are Young” and T-Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” are horrifically catchy. We’ve got our money on Ocean, though.

4. Just ignore “Best Rock Song” (Springsteen, Mumford, AND Coldplay — it’s as if the Grammys are a parody of themselves) and focus on “Best Alternative Music Album,” where Fiona Apple’s "The Idler Wheel," M83′s "Hurry Up, ""We’re Dreaming," and Tom Waits’ "Bad As Me" won’t have to compete with the likes of Muse’s latest disappointment. (Sorry, guys, but "The 2nd Law" isn’t good.)

5. The Grammys always get a lot of crap for their Best New Artist choices because, usually, they’re hardly new at all (like in 2011, when Esperanza Spalding won, despite releasing her first album five years prior). That trend continues this year with fun., who have been making people say, “Wait, is that the same dude from the Format?” since 2009, but the much more recent (and awesome) Alabama Shakes were also selected, and hopefully will join recent winners Bon Iver, Adele, and Amy Winehouse in taking home the trophy.

6. Redeeming the entirety of “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance,” which features songs from LMFAO (“Sexy and I Know it”) and Maroon 5 (“Payphone”), is Florence and the Machine’s anthemic “Shake It Out.”

7. “N*ggas in Paris” is only eligible for a Grammy now? It feels like "Watch the Throne" came out forever ago. But alas, it rests alongside the likes of “Daughters” by Nas, “Mercy” by Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T, and 2 Chainz, and “I Do” by Young Jeezy, Jay-Z, and Andre 3000, any of whom would be a worthwhile winner, especially over fellow nominee “HYFR (Hell Ya F*cking Right).”

8. F*CK YEAH “GHOST WALKING” BY LAMB OF GOD FOR “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.”

9. “Best Rap Album”:"Take Care"; "Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1"; "Life Is Good"; "Undun"; "God Forgives, I Don’t"; and "Based On A T.R.U. Story." There’s honestly not a cringeworthy choice in there, though 2 Chainz’s full-length debut is far behind Nas and the Roots in terms of Grammy-winning quality.

10. Oh thank God: "Jesus At The Center Live" received a “Best Gospel Album” nominee. Seriously, thank him.

11. After stunning the world in 2011 with a surprise Album of the Year win, Arcade Fire is once again nominated for a Grammy, this time for their “Best Song Written For Visual Media” contribution to "The Hunger Games soundtrack,"“Abraham’s Daughter.” They’re going against stiff competition with “Man or Muppet,” from "The Muppets," but either is > compared to “Let Me Be Your Star” from "Smash."

12. No Justin Bieber.

CBS Issues No-Nudity 'Wardrobe Advisory' For Sunday's Grammy Awards

Pink 2012 Grammys

Musicians take note, Grammy officials and CBS do not want to see your buttocks, breasts or genitals during Sunday's 55th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

CBS Program Practices have issued a "wardrobe advisory" asking "that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered."

Not always an easy fete for a group of musicians that include artists whose brands rely on nearly nude costuming.

The advisory goes on to say that "Thong type costumes are problematic."Uh oh, Pink!

And "Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples."What's Nicki Minaj supposed to do?!

And Lady Gaga is NOT going to be happy about "Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic."

To see the rest of the stern advisory, read it here on Deadline >

But who can blame CBS for being extra cautious, they are the network, after all, who got fined $550,000 by the FCC after Janet Jackson's famous "wardrobe malfunction" during the Super Bowl halftime show in 2004.

10 Crazy Moments You Can Expect To See At This Year's Grammy Awards

$

0

rihanna bruno mars sting

What can we expect at the 55th annual Grammy awards show this Sunday night on CBS? Traditionally there is no tradition here.

A show composed of musicians not actors tends to be the most "spontaneous" of the awards season. The Grammy red carpet has always been more outrageous than its Oscar counterpart – remember Lady Gaga in the egg? Performances can be unplugged or unscripted. Remember Kanye? It can feature unexpected singers. Remember Gwyneth and Cee Lo Green?

This is a show that rarely drags and is filled with color. Here are some things to look for.

1. Costumes will be much more subdued—no "thong-type" costumes allowed.

Costumes can be completely out there, but they have to be on YOU. CBS issued you a wardrobe guide for everyone appearing on camera on Sunday night.

No commercial endorsements, no plugs for any causes on your t-shirts or anywhere else. But the best part is the paragraph that deals with decency which we share with you in its entirety.

"Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible "puffy" bare skin exposure."

2. The Sandy Hook elementary school choir will perform.

They appeared at the Super Bowl singing America the Beautiful with Jennifer Hudson. Now they're back with the song of last summer, Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe.

Choir director Sabrina Post describes the children's public performances this way:

"This opportunity to do something positive lets the kids know that although a lot of things happen in our world that are not pleasant, like this that happened with us in Newtown, there are many giving people and wonderful things that can come out of life, so don't get discouraged."

3. Justin Timberlake might perform an unreleased song.

Not Bieber but Timberlake. Timberlake will be performing at the Grammys for the first time since 2009 (when he stepped in at the last minute to sing Let's Stay Together with Al Green after Chris Brown and Rihanna dropped out.)

Fans are hoping he'll sing the newly released soul single Suit & Tie, featuring Jay-Z, but word from the Grammy people is that he sent them something newer that he's considering.

Jennifer Lopez Poked Fun At CBS' Wardrobe Malfunction Memo

jennifer lopez grammys 2013

CBS' wardrobe memo didn't scare Jennifer Lopez.

The singer showed up at the 55th annual Grammys wearing an Anthony Vaccarello dress that showed off a lot of leg. The outfit brings to mind images of Angelina Jolie's Oscar dress from last year.

The last time Lopez created such a stir at the Grammys was in 2000 when she wore a low-cut green Versace gown that dipped down to her stomach.

Earlier last week, an internal CBS memo leaked warning talent to avoid "thong type costumes" and asking that "buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered."

When Lopez took the stage with singer Pitbull to present, she addressed her bare leg.

"As you can see, I read the memo," said Lopez. "Whatever you're wearing, or not wearing, this party is worldwide." Watch the clip below:

Katy Perry abided by CBS' no-nudity "Wardrobe Advisory" at the Grammy Awards by wearing a mint green Gucci gown that fully covered her body — save for a keyhole cut-out showcasing the singer's ample cleavage, which ended up stealing the show.

And Katy's cleavage had quite the star-studded night.

First, it posed on the red carpet.

Beyonce Jay-Z Jessica Biel Grammys 2013

CBS may have instructed Grammy-goers "that buttocks and female breasts [be] adequately covered" in their "wardrobe advisory," but that didn't stop musicians from bringing their A-game to Sunday's red carpet for the 55th annual Grammy Awards at the Nokia theater in Los Angeles.

Couples Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel and Rihanna and Chris Brown were all dressed to impress, but we can't say the same about some other stars.

BEST: Rihanna went for a softer look in this custom red Alaïa dress.

BEST: We also loved the cream, bedazzled two-piece she wore on-stage during the Bob Marley tribute.

ODD: Rihanna and Chris Brown cuddling during the show, fours years after the assault on the same day. Brown's stylist said he wore an all-white suit to find "inner peace."

Rihanna and Chris Brown's public displays of affection, Katy Perry's revealing sea foam green dress, and Taylor Swift's opening Grammy performance were all among the most talked about moments from the 55th annual Grammy Awards.

If you're wondering which musician had people talking the most, the social media analysts at Networked Insights measured the number of celebrity mentions across Twitter, Facebook, and blogs to figure out who was discussed the most online last night.

We've recorded the top ten below. Surprisingly, Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake are missing from the list despite Timberlake's first wide public performance of songs from his new album, "The 20/20 Experience."

Instead, Jay-Z and Timberlake came in 17 and 15 on the list respectively with 348,621 and 375,514 mentions.

Also missing from the top ten are Adele and Kelly Clarkson.

Who did people talk about most online? Here's the top ten:most discussed grammy musicians 2013

Rihanna nearly doubled the amount of online buzz of singer Taylor Swift.

According to Networked Insights, the Barbados singer's solo performance of "Stay" had 114,800 tweets per minute last night.

It was the second largest spike in Twitter activity during the show other than Jay-Z, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and The Dream's win for best rap collaboration (seeing 116,400 tweets per minute).

Social Media Can't Replace Email (Social Media Today)
There are many reasons that social media platforms will never fully replace email within the working environment, despite Yammer and others bringing social media and social messaging platforms into the workplace:

  • Email provides a level of privacy and professionalism
  • Email inboxes provide a one stop-hub for tasks and one-to-one communications
  • There's not the worry about privacy issues with email as there is with social media
  • Email works across all platforms and applications
  • Email has become more than just a two-way communication tool
  • Social media does not provide a professional online space for business one-to-ones
  • Social media has a major issue with ownership

Social media may be becoming one of most common ways we choose to communicate but email is still required and will continue to be used as it provides users with their own hub where they manage communications in one place. Read >>

Why Not Using Social Media Is Hurting Your Brand (Splash Media)
Are you in social media branding denial? If your business is not in social media, your brand will be at a disadvantage. Here's why it's essential:

  1. The conversation is already out there. You're either joining in, or you're missing out.
  2. Facebook alone has 618 million daily active users, how can you not step onto that playing field?
  3. It's an easy and immediate way to connect to both your fans and your potential customers.
  4. It's a way to support your traditional marketing ventures.
  5. There’s a huge benefit to having access to real-time market intelligence and feedback.

Social Media Branding is an extremely powerful tool, and not something that should be rushed into without time to outline clear goals and objectives. Read >>

Twitter Charging $200K For Promoted Trends (Mashable)
Twitter’s ad business is still a work in progress, but here’s one positive sign: Prices for the company’s “promoted trends” have been steadily rising, and are now at the $200,000-a-day mark in the U.S. Twitter’s newest price hike went into effect earlier this year, and represents a 33 percent increase over the $150,000 rate the company was asking for in 2012. And it’s up 150 percent from the $80,000 a day it was getting for the ads back when it launched them in 2010. The promoted trend lets an advertiser insert its own message atop the “trends” list on Twitter.com home pages and on Twitter apps; Twitter sells a single message a day, per territory. Except when it doesn’t. Read >>

Twitter Mobile Users More Engaged With Brands (MediaPost)
At a recent conference, Guy Yalif, head of global product marketing at Twitter, highlighted that the company’s biggest mobile adherents are more likely to be active, engaged users and a receptive audience for brands. Yalif said 200 million people log into Twitter at least once a month. And of those, 120 million, or 60 percent, do so at least once on a mobile device. Within that is a “large chunk” of users who interact with Twitter primarily through their mobile devices. Yalif also noted that some 80 percent of viewers have a mobile device in front of them while they’re watching TV, and two-thirds of these are mobile-first Twitter users. "Invest in a TV ad and make those dollars work harder for you,” said Yalif, adding that 95 percent of the social conversation about TV is happening on Twitter. Read >>
